Well, do you?
If not it's ok, the internet has everyone distracted and focused on hair type.
You are born with your skin type, meaning your genetics play the main role in detemining what you end up with but like most other things skin can change over time. Your skin type is mainly determined by how much sebum (oil) it is producing.
The four skin types are:
- Combination
- Oily
- Dry
- Normal
Combination Skin: Most Common
As the name suggests the skin is doing more than one thing. Typically we associate combination skin with an oily Tzone and normal or dry everything else. The Tzone is the center or your forehead and bridge of your nose. You may also notice larger pores or blackheads here.
Dry Skin
Dry skin does not produce enough sebum so it needs extra care to assist with proper barrier function. Skin texture can be slightly rough, pores tend to be very small if they are visible at all and the skin can also feel tight.
Oily Skin
This skin type produces too much sebum and is prone to blemishes due to oil and skin cell buildup. Larger pores, blackheads, acne and visible oil are all characteristics of this skin type.
"Normal" Skin: NOT normal
This skin type has a good oil-water balance that can fluctuate with varying degrees of moisture. Skin typically doesn't have blemishes or acne pores are visible but not overly large. There is no visible oil on the skin.
Melanin in your skin does not determine your skin type. Everyone can be oily, combination, dry or normal. That being said if you are melanin heavy walking around under the lie of black don't crack I suggest you rethink your position. What do you think ashy is? It's CRACKED dry skin. And yes you SHOULD be wearing SPF, everyday, even when it's cloudy.
Understanding how the integumentary system works will help you, help you. A skin care regime just like a hair care regime DOES NOT need to be complex. It needs to be well thought out, effective, address your specific concerns and fit within your budget. It can be as simple as a cleanser and moisturizer with SPF.
