Hello CurlFriend!
The CurlSpa August
Welcome to The CurlSpa, I'm so happy you found it! On this page you will find everything you need to know for what's happening at The CurlSpa this month.
Get ahead of Summer Damage
Summer is fun but you need a plan for what it leaves behind.

August is the month when summer starts to leave its mark.
Long days in the sun, swimming pools, air conditioning, and intense heat all take a toll—even if you don't notice it right away.
You may begin seeing:
-
Hair that feels rough, dry, or breaks more easily
-
Dark spots that seem more noticeable than they did in June
-
Skin that feels dehydrated or uneven
Summer damage doesn't disappear when the weather changes.
It takes time to occur and it takes time and effort to correct it.
Where Does Summer Damage Come From?
☀️ UV Exposure
The sun doesn't just affect your skin.
It also weakens the hair shaft, fades/lightens color, increases dryness, and contributes to hyperpigmentation.
Professional treatments help repair the damage that's already occurred but daily SPF, a hat and a diet rich in antioxidants help protect your results.
🏊 Chlorine
Chlorinated water can cause dryness in both your hair and your skin. It can especially effect color treated hair so be mindful. Even healthy curls can become brittle after repeated swimming trips.
Try soaking your hair down in the shower before you enter the pool and wear a swim cap. I know it isn't the most glamorous thing to wear poolside but choose your hard. You can look funny for a few hours and keep your hair healthy or your can worry about what people you don't know think and wreck your curls.
🌊 Salt Water
Mineral deposits don't allow your hair to absorb water properly. These mineral deposits can also weigh the hair down making springy curls limp and lifeless.
Before you think this is you, when was your last trim? Remember, here at The Curlspa we begin with the simplest solution first. If you have not been consistent with your routine maintenance then start there. Limp curls also come from too much length.
If you have been up on your routine maintenance and you've been in the ocean, on a boat or in the pool schedule an Olaplex clarifying treatment.
❄️ Air Conditioning
We love staying cool...
Your skin doesn't like the back and forth of hot to cold and back again.
Air conditioning continuously pulls moisture from the environment, often leaving skin tight and hair dull without us realizing it.
If you have control of the thermostat where you work/live try keeping the rooms you occupy at a temperature that is not an extreme to what is outside. Try not to blast the A/C when you get in your car as the extreme and sudden temperature changes can have negative effects on your skin.
What you can also do if you work in an environment that is full of recycled air is to drink water all day to combat the effects from the inside out. Remember to moisturize day and night and also try adding some Jojoba oil to your routine if you do begin to notice some dryness. The oil should go on after your serums but before your SPF moisturizer.
👣 Dry Feet
Sandals and bare feet lead to dryness.
Summer can be especially hard on your feet since they are not tucked inside shoes and socks all day they tend to lose more moisture. Face it when you take your shoes and socks off at the end of the day they are pretty soft. Thanks to your sweat and cotton socks maintaining a healthy level of moisture.
In the summer your toenails grow faster and feet dry out almost as quickly as your wash and go. Use your scrubby gloves to gently remove excess callus and dead skin then follow up with some Jojoba before you even dry off. Put the oil on your feet and around the cuticles of your toenails.
Having regular pedicures will help stay ahead of ingrown nails, relieve painful sidewall impactions and keep nails at a comfortable length.
Professional Treatments for a Jumpstart on Skin Repair
Home care maintains your results.
Professional treatments accelerate them.
This month we're highlighting one of our favorite ways to refresh summer skin:
✨ Chemical Peels✨
Despite the name, chemical peels are safe and yes they are safe for black people. I have an article about them here. Think about it, how much sense would it really make for me to offer services that are bad for black people?
Anyhoo, chemical exfoliation treatments are designed to improve:
✔ Hyperpigmentation
✔ Uneven skin tone
✔ Congestion
✔ Dull skin
✔ Overall skin texture
Your treatment is customized to your skin type and goals, helping reveal healthier-looking skin while supporting long-term results.
🌿 Summer Recovery Plan

"This fall we're introducing new treatments designed to help repair summer damage."
In the mean time try this new leave in conditioner "Fast Food" from AG Care to stay ahead of dryness and the damage that can cause.
It's thick, creamy and smells amazing. You'll definitely want to eat it. This fits perfectly into your simple four step hair routine. This would be your moisture step that comes after you condition and before you apply your hold product.
Request I use it at your next appointment or you can order here.
Please be sure to save this page to your phone's home screen so you can easily access The CurlSpa. Feel free to save my little pedicure logo and use it for your icon as well.
